Hire an AI Developer on Fiverr (2026): Chatbots, AI Agents & Automation — Costs, Scope and How to Vet

Short answer: a simple AI chatbot or automation on Fiverr often starts around $100, Fiverr's own marketplace data puts a typical AI chatbot project at about $216 and an AI agent project at about $295, and anything that touches your CRM, phone line or several channels quickly moves into the $500 to $2,000 range. On top of that you pay Fiverr's buyer fee and the running costs of the AI itself. This guide shows the 2026 numbers, what each budget really buys, and a vetting checklist that protects you from a nice demo that breaks in week two.

Our take: Fiverr is a good place to buy a clearly scoped AI build: a website FAQ bot that answers from your documents, a WhatsApp lead bot, or an n8n / Make automation with one or two AI steps. Budget roughly $200 to $700 for a solid first version, and write your test questions before you order. For an agent that takes real actions in live systems (bookings, refunds, CRM updates), pay for a senior or Fiverr Pro developer and use milestones.

How we researched this: We did not place a test order for this guide. We compared Fiverr's own 2026 cost guides (built from its marketplace data), an independent September 2026 reading of 252 Fiverr chatbot reviews, an independent September 2026 study of Fiverr AI agent and voice agent gigs, and Fiverr's help pages on fees. Each number below names its source and date.

What "AI developer" means on Fiverr in 2026

The label covers very different jobs. Pick the right one first, because it decides the price more than anything else.

Demand is high, and Fiverr's own 2026 cost guides now list AI agents, custom GPT apps and AI integrations as separate services. That also means many sellers have recently rebranded as "AI experts", so vetting matters more here than in older categories like logo design.

Read these together. Starting prices (about $95 to $150) are the cheapest package, usually one channel and a basic script. Average project prices from Fiverr's own data ($216 to $341) are what a normal first build costs. And the review data shows that almost half of real chatbot orders on good gigs went above $400, because buyers added their data, more channels and a human handoff.

One honest wrinkle: a different Fiverr guide (AI experts, 2026) lists AI chatbot development at about $520 per project, while the chatbot guide says about $216. Fiverr doesn't explain the gap; it likely reflects different service mixes. Treat $200 to $550 as the normal band for a first AI chatbot.

The costs the gig price doesn't show

The build is a one-time cost. The AI keeps billing you every month. Fiverr's chatbot cost guide lists these recurring items:

Voice agents add per-minute fees. In September 2026 Myrado recorded published rates of $0.05 a minute for Vapi's platform fee (other providers billed on top), $0.07 to $0.31 for Retell and $0.12 to $0.14 for Bland. Its reading of 18 Fiverr gigs found that none of the voice packages said how many call minutes were included.

Ask one question before you order: "Whose accounts will the AI, the phone number and the workflows run on?" The right answer is always "yours".

How to vet an AI developer on Fiverr: 8-point checklist

1. Write 20 to 30 real test questions first

Take them from real customer emails or chats, with the answer you expect. Brief & Hire's review study found that projects go best when the job is defined by real questions and a pass mark agreed before work starts, not after the demo.

2. Write a "never do" list

What must the bot refuse or pass to a human every time? Refunds, medical or legal advice, prices it isn't sure of. Put this in the brief.

3. Ask for a live demo you can break

Screenshots and videos are easy to fake. Ask for a link to a working bot from a past project, then ask it awkward questions. Does it admit when it doesn't know, or does it make things up?

4. Check the stack matches the job

A good seller explains why they'd use a hosted builder (Botpress, Voiceflow) versus custom code (LangChain, OpenAI Assistants), and n8n versus Make. "I can build anything with any tool" is a warning sign.

5. Count different buyers, not reviews

On one shortlisted gig, Brief & Hire found a single buyer wrote 15 of 35 reviews. Repeat buyers are a good sign, but 35 reviews may mean 14 clients. Look for reviews from orders the size of yours.

6. Keep accounts and keys in your name

Your OpenAI or Anthropic API key, your n8n or Make workspace, your phone number. Share access, never ownership. Rotate any key you shared after delivery.

7. Pay by milestone on anything over two weeks

Fiverr supports milestone orders. Release each payment only when that milestone's tests pass. Bugs accepted in milestone one get built into milestone two.

8. Test before the order auto-completes

Fiverr completes an order automatically three days after delivery if you don't respond. Run your test questions in that window, not next week.

FAQ

How much does it cost to hire an AI developer on Fiverr?

Fiverr's 2026 marketplace data puts a typical AI chatbot project at about $216 and an AI agent project at about $295, with starting gigs around $100. Advanced chatbots with integrations run $800 to $2,000 or more. Fiverr adds a 5.5% fee, plus $3.50 on orders under $200.

What is the difference between an AI chatbot and an AI agent?

A chatbot answers questions, usually from your FAQ or documents. An agent also takes actions, such as booking a slot, creating a ticket or updating your CRM. Actions need more testing and error handling, so agents cost more.

Are there monthly costs after the build?

Usually yes. AI model usage is billed per request, hosted chatbot platforms often charge $15 to $50 a month or more, and voice agents bill per minute. Fiverr estimates ongoing maintenance at $100 to $500 a month for busy bots.

How do I vet an AI developer on Fiverr?

Write 20 to 30 real test questions and a never-do list, ask for a live demo you can test, check reviews from orders your size, keep API keys and accounts in your name, and pay by milestone on larger projects.

Should the chatbot run on my accounts or the seller's?

On yours. Your AI provider key, your automation workspace and your phone number should be in your name, with the seller given access. If the seller hosts everything, leaving can mean a rebuild.

Did TrustScore test these developers?

No. We did not place test orders for this guide. It is based on Fiverr's published cost data, independent 2026 studies of Fiverr gigs and reviews, and Fiverr's help pages.
